In Memoriam: Dr. Z. Charles Fixler (1925-2026)

We are saddened to share the passing of Dr. Z. Charles Fixler, age 100, on January 8, 2026.

Dr. Fixler was a founding member of Noah and served for decades as our Society’s historian. He attended nearly every Noah Annual Meeting since 1958, and even long after retirement could reliably be found in the scientific sessions—pen in hand—taking careful notes. Members will remember him for his warm smile, generous spirit, and his seemingly endless store of Noah stories.

Dr. Fixler practiced dermatology for more than 60 years and was deeply committed to education and service. He was a volunteer professor in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Cincinnati, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was active in both local and national dermatologic organizations. His many honors included the St. George Award from the American Cancer Society, the Golden Triangle Award from the American Academy of Dermatology, and Practitioner of the Year from the Dermatology Foundation.

Beyond medicine, Dr. Fixler was a lifelong musician, playing trumpet with the Ohio Military Band for many years, including a memorable performance onstage with The Beach Boys in 1994.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lieberman Fixler, and is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his dear companion, Gretalee Kaplan.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. A social gathering to celebrate Dr. Fixler’s life will take place on Sunday, January 11, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Kenwood in Cincinnati. Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Fixler’s presence shaped Noah for nearly seven decades. He will be deeply missed.
