After graduating from the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, he trained in the dermatology residency training program at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He then stayed on for several more years of post-doctoral research training in the laboratory of Joel Habener, M.D. (Howard Hughes Medical Institute) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) while also seeing patients as a faculty member in the Dermatology Department at MGH (Instructor, then Assistant Professor). In 2000, Dr. Maytin moved to Cleveland Clinic to take up a joint faculty position in Dermatology and Biomedical Engineering at Cleveland Clinic, and to establish his own laboratory there. The research programs he initiated in epidermal biology, wound healing, and photodynamic therapy continue to the present day, evolving over time in a bench-to-bedside manner as new discoveries are made. In addition, Dr. Maytin is quite active within our research-centric medical school, mentoring medical students during their Honors research thesis projects, working with Dermatology residents, and serving on various academic committees.

Although his research interests cover a broad range of topics, Dr. Maytin’s investigations probably have had the greatest impact in the area of photodynamic therapy (PDT), which is the use of a topical drug and light to treat skin cancers and precancers. His research on PDT has led to several significant advancements in the field, including new protocols to eliminate pain that patients experience during PDT of actinic keratoses with blue light or red light, and to increase treatment efficacy by pretreating lesions using fluorouracil or Vitamin D prior to PDT.  All of these advances were the result of translational research in which principles were first worked out in mouse models of skin cancer in the laboratory, and then developed into investigator-initiated clinical trials. Dr. Maytin’s research efforts have been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and resulted in over 100 research manuscripts listed on PubMed as of 2025. His most research effort focuses upon using PDT to stimulate anti-tumor immunity against skin cancer, by employing a combination of Vitamin D and PDT as neoadjuvants to surgery. In all research endeavors, Dr. Maytin is a strong advocate for teamwork and collaboration with others as the most reliable way to gain expertise, generate new ideas, and find new friends and colleagues.
